The Equipment Bench

Weapons and their abilities, how the weapon-skill slots work, an accessory compendium, and what to make at the Item Transmuter.

Spoiler level: names late-game weapons, accessories, superbosses and where things come from. No plot.

How weapons work

  • Each character has 7 weapons. Every weapon carries one unique ability — use it enough and the character learns it permanently, usable on any weapon. So a big early job is cycling weapons just to bank their abilities.
  • Weapons level up on their own as you bank SP (5 per character level-up, plus SP books). Each level adds stat boosts, a new weapon skill, and eventually more skill slots (max 4) and materia slots.
  • You equip up to 4 weapon skills per weapon, and they're free to swap — so the weapon choice is really about its ability, its stat lean (physical vs magic), and its materia slots.

Weapon skill colours

Blue — raw stats. Flat +HP, +ATK, +MAG. Always safe early.
Red — conditional offense. +damage on crits / aerial / ranged / staggered targets. Match to how the character actually fights.
Green — defense & support. Block damage reduction, ATB recovery, heal potency. Tanks and healers.
Yellow — unique. Odd, powerful effects (e.g. boost a mode, cheaper abilities). Usually the standouts — read them.
Priority: damage dealers — Red skills that match their pattern + one big Blue ATK. Tanks/support — Green (block, ATB, heals). Everyone benefits from a Blue HP node early. Check the Yellow on every weapon.

Weapons by character

The ★ pick is the common endgame recommendation — but grab every weapon at least briefly to learn its ability.

Accessory compendium

The ones people actually equip. One accessory slot per character — make it count.

AccessoryEffectWhere

Not exhaustive — there are dozens more minor ones. Full lists: PowerPyx, Game8.

The Item Transmuter

Cloud gets it from Broden at the Kalm Inn (Chapter 2). Hold the button in the pause menu to craft; you don't need a bench.

The craftsmanship loop

  • You earn 10 Craftsmanship EXP the first time you craft each recipe — not for repeats.
  • Levelling Craftsmanship unlocks new recipes automatically and increases the quantity each craft produces.
  • So: craft one of every new recipe as it appears, even things you don't need. That's the fastest way up, and it keeps better gear unlocking.

What's actually worth making

  • Armor — transmuted armor outpaces the shops and saves gil. Keep your party in crafted armor with the slot counts you want.
  • Transmute-only accessories — several strong ones are craft-exclusive: Psychic's Charm, Jeweled Ring, Malboro Orb, and every “Enhanced” variant. The table below is the shortlist.
  • “Enhanced” upgrade recipes — they bump an accessory's stat perks. Worth it for gear you keep equipped.
  • Consumables in bulk — Potions, Ethers, debuff cures, and Cushions for the tent/heal are cheaper crafted than bought once your quantity-per-craft is high.

Materials

  • Come from the field, enemy drops / steals / morphs (Cloud's Manipulate-adjacent), and Treasure Hunts.
  • In the Transmuter menu, the touchpad highlights a material and tells you which region it's from — use it before you leave a region if you're short.
  • Bone-icon materials are region-specific enemy drops — the ones you'll actually run out of. Grab them when a fight offers them.

Recipes worth crafting

Craftsmanship level shown is when the recipe appears. Material quantities drift between guides — the in-game menu is the source of truth; treat this as a shopping list of what to chase.

Recipe data from Game8 and Fextralife. Dozens of minor consumable and armor recipes are omitted — those are worth one craft each for the EXP, not a shopping trip.
